D-Day remembered

June 5th, marks the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings during World War Two.

D-Day, the start of the campaign to liberate occupied Northern Europe from the German army, saw thousands of allied troops cross the channel and storm the fortified beaches of Normandy.

The anniversary has been marked by a series of events in the UK and France to pay tribute to those that took part, and lost their lives, during the subsequent battles.

Over 156,000 landed on five French beaches in landing craft on June 5, 1944 – with over 4000 men dying on the first day alone.
