Sunderland are the first team confirmed for the League One Play Offs, after playing out a 0-0 draw away at Portsmouth’s Fratton Park on Thursday May 16.
The ‘Black Cats’, who had played Portsmouth three times this season without a victory, went into Thursday’s game with a slender advantage after their 1-0 win at The Stadium Of Light just days earlier (Saturday May 11), with Chris Maguire scoring the crucial goal.
In a resolute performance, Sunderland managed to restrict ‘Pompey’s’ chances in the return leg. The game was a fractious, nervous affair and not easy on the eye, but that mattered little to the large section of supporters from the Northeast, who will now be hoping that their team can bounce straight back into the Championship after their relegation last season.
Sunderland will now play either Charlton or Doncaster Rovers who play the second leg of their tie at Charlton’s Valley ground on Friday May 17. The London side go into the game with the advantage, after winning 2-1 away at Doncaster’s Keepmoat Stadium on May 12.
The League One Play Off Final will take place on Sunday May 26.
